What is Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum?

Kelvingrove is a municipal art gallery and museum run by Glasgow Life, and it opened in 1901. Spread across 22 themed galleries, it holds more than 8,000 objects covering fine art, natural history, arms and armour and Ancient Egypt. It is regularly cited as Scotland's most-visited free attraction, and it manages to feel both like a serious museum and an easy, enjoyable day out.

What to see

The collections are wide-ranging, so there is something for most interests under one roof. Highlights include the art galleries, the natural history displays, the arms and armour collection, and the Ancient Egypt material. One of the most photographed features is the Spitfire suspended overhead. In 2026 there are also temporary exhibitions to look out for: 'Barbie: The Exhibition' (running until 18 October 2026) and 'Who was Chevaliere d'Eon?' (on until July 2027). Note that some special exhibitions may be separately ticketed even though general admission is free.

You will find Kelvingrove on Argyle Street, Glasgow G3 8AG, in the West End beside Kelvingrove Park. There is no entry ticket and no mandatory timed entry for general admission - you simply walk in, and donations are welcome.

Opening hours are Monday to Thursday and Saturday 10:00-17:00, and Friday and Sunday 11:00-17:00. The building is currently undergoing conservation and restoration work, so expect some scaffolding and reduced parking on the west side, but the museum remains open throughout.

For a free attraction, Kelvingrove is hard to beat. The variety alone - fine art one moment, a suspended Spitfire or Ancient Egyptian objects the next - means most visitors find something that grabs them, and families, couples and solo browsers are all well catered for. Because there is no ticket and no timed entry, it also works brilliantly as a flexible stop: pop in for an hour or lose a whole afternoon. The ongoing restoration work means a little scaffolding and slightly less parking on the west side, but with the building staying open throughout, it takes very little away from the experience.
