A beach day is the cheapest, easiest summer win — if you pick the right one. We've rated the UK's best family-friendly beaches on five things parents actually care about: parking, toilets, lifeguards, lunch options, and how gentle the waves are.
South coast — easy from London
Camber Sands, East Sussex
Three miles of proper sand dunes. The closest "Caribbean" beach to London. Massive carpark fills by 11am on hot days — set off early or use the train to Rye + bus.
Best for: all ages. Lifeguard: RNLI seasonal. Eat: chippy in Camber village + several beach cafés.
West Wittering, West Sussex
Blue Flag, pristine, properly sandy. Drive in early — carpark closes when full. Pack a picnic; café options are limited but enough.
Best for: all ages, especially toddlers (gentle waves). Lifeguard: seasonal.
Studland Bay, Dorset
National Trust beach with three sections (Knoll, Middle, Shell). Knoll has lifeguards + best for families. Shell Bay is quieter.
Best for: all ages. Lifeguard: seasonal. Eat: Knoll Beach Café.
Bournemouth
Seven miles of beach. Pier, deckchairs, ice cream, easy train from London. Less posh than Wittering but easier with kids — everything you need is within walking distance.
Best for: all ages. Lifeguard: seasonal.

South west — proper sand, big sky
Woolacombe, North Devon
Blue Flag award. Three miles of sand. Surf school for older kids (Nick Thorne). Carpark £8–12 depending on time of year.
Best for: 6+ (older kids love the surf). Lifeguard: RNLI all summer.
Saunton Sands, North Devon
Three miles of flat sand, gentle slope into the sea. Best UK beach for very young children — wide, shallow, easy. Park's pricey though (~£10).
Best for: under-7s. Lifeguard: RNLI all summer.
Polzeath, Cornwall
Beautiful, family-friendly Cornish bay. Surf rental on the beach. Get there before 10am on hot days.
Best for: 5+ (waves a bit bigger).
Porthminster, St Ives, Cornwall
Sheltered, gentle, lovely. Properly photogenic St Ives in walking distance. Pricey accommodation if you stay overnight.
Best for: all ages.
East coast — quieter, sandier, often cheaper
Cromer, Norfolk
Victorian pier, end-of-pier theatre, crabbing off the pier — buy a line and bucket for £3. Genuinely magical for 5–10 year olds.
Best for: 4–11. Lifeguard: seasonal.
Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Wide sands, beach huts (rentable), pine forest behind. Long walk from the carpark — bring a wagon for kid kit. Stunning at low tide.
Best for: all ages.
Filey, North Yorkshire
Five miles of sand. Less crowded than Scarborough next door. Decent fish & chips on the seafront.
Best for: all ages.
Bamburgh, Northumberland
Castle backdrop. Vast empty sand. Wild and beautiful — colder than the south coast but worth it.
Best for: hardier kids 6+.
Wales — best value beaches
Tenby South Beach, Pembrokeshire
Three beaches in one town. South Beach is the big sandy one with shallow waves. Picture-postcard harbour. Get the train from Cardiff/Swansea.
Best for: all ages.
Rhossili, Gower
Voted UK's best beach multiple times. Vast, dramatic, less family-comforts but if your kids will walk it's spectacular.
Best for: 7+ (long walk to beach).
Barafundle Bay, Pembrokeshire
Hidden gem. 15-min walk from carpark, no facilities, but the most beautiful beach in Wales. Bring everything.
Scotland
Luskentyre, Isle of Harris
The most beautiful beach in the UK. Turquoise water, white sand. Far away — but if you're already in the Hebrides, unmissable.
Coldingham Bay, Berwickshire
Family-friendly Scottish beach with lifeguards, café, gentle waves. Easy from Edinburgh.
