This Byzantine-style church on the eastern edge of St Mark's Square is one of Italy's most recognisable buildings — and, as of summer 2025, one you now need to book in advance to enter. The most important thing to know: entry is now ticketed, not free. Since 1 July 2025, a mandatory online timed-entry booking system applies, and the on-site ticket offices have been removed — so you must book in advance rather than turning up and queuing at the door. Time slots are issued roughly every 30 minutes.

On price, official adult basilica admission is around EUR 10 through the official webshop (some guides quote closer to EUR 12). Combined tickets that add the Pala d'Oro or the Museum and Horses Loggia run to about EUR 20, and a complete ticket covering everything is around EUR 30. Third-party skip-the-line entry tickets are also sold from roughly EUR 19–28.

A few rules worth knowing before you book. Tickets are personal, name-bearing and non-transferable. Skip-the-line access does not exempt you from a mandatory security screening, so leave time for that regardless of which ticket you hold. And since 1 July 2025, if you book a guided tour, you must enter together with your guide or host.

The one honest caveat is that it is no longer the free, walk-straight-in experience it used to be — you now need to plan around a timed slot and, if you want the Pala d'Oro or the museum, pay more for the combined tickets. If you are happy to book ahead and build the visit into your day, it earns its place near the top of a Venice itinerary. If you want to keep things loose and unplanned, be aware that spontaneity is no longer an option here.
