You've got £400. Three UK summer festivals to pick from: Glastonbury, Latitude, Boomtown. Which one stretches the budget furthest once you add up the ticket, the camping fee, the train and the chips? We did the maths — properly — and the winner isn't what we expected.
The brief
£400 has to cover:
- Festival entry (whatever the cheapest legitimate ticket is)
- Camping fee or off-site accommodation
- Return train from London
- 3 days of food + drinks (the boring bit)
No tents already owned, no friends with a campervan, no cheating with day-tickets if it's a 4-day festival. Just the realistic out-of-pocket spend for a 25-year-old with mates.
Glastonbury — £415 ticket alone, sold out before you start
Glastonbury's 2026 ticket is £415 + £5 booking fee = £420. The £400 budget is already £20 over before food, train or a single beer. Yes, the ticket includes camping (Glasto is famously all-in). But you've still got:
- Train London Paddington → Castle Cary: £55 advance
- Food + drink for 5 days: £150 minimum
- Cider tax (this is real): another £30
Realistic total: £655. Glastonbury is the best festival in the world. It is not a £400 festival.
Latitude — £245 ticket, £400 covers everything
Latitude in Suffolk, 23-26 July 2026. Standard weekend ticket: £245. Camping included.

£59 over budget — but cut one pint a day and you're under £400. Realistic. Latitude is also the most family-friendly + theatre-heavy of the three, which is part of why the ticket stays reasonable.

Boomtown — £279 ticket, £400 leaves room for the upgrade
Boomtown 2026 in Winchester, 6-10 August. Standard weekend ticket: £279.

Boomtown without the upgrade still busts £400 by £54. With Cosmic Camping you're at £553 — but that £99 buys you hot showers and a secure tent which, by day 3 of any festival, is genuinely worth £99.

Verdict
Latitude wins on pure £/value. £400 nearly covers the whole weekend, the festival is family- and adult-comfortable, and the train is the cheapest of the three.
Boomtown wins on spectacle. £400 won't quite get you there, but it's the only "immersive theatre festival pretending to be a music festival" we've ever been to. Worth the £50-150 overspend for that.
Glastonbury loses the £400 challenge — but only because the ticket is £415. If you've already got the ticket from the lottery, food + train comes in well under £200.
The bigger pattern: camping costs more than tickets at most UK festivals
Glastonbury, Latitude and Boomtown all include camping in the ticket. Most don't. Reading premium tent rental is £600 (on top of a £295 ticket). Wilderness Boutique Camping is £799pp. Camp Bestival's family bell tent is £550 on top of the £245/£75 adult/kid tickets. The festival upsell of the 2020s is no longer the headliner — it's where you sleep.

How to make any of these cheaper
- Book trains 12 weeks ahead. Latitude's Liverpool St → Halesworth drops to £35 if booked early.
- Bring your own tent. Decathlon's Quechua MH100 (2-person) is £55 on Amazon — cheaper than ONE night of premium camping.
- Bring £20 of dry food from a supermarket before you arrive. Festival food is £12-18 per meal.
