The British Grand Prix at Silverstone draws 140,000+ spectators across three days in July. Hotels within 20 minutes of the circuit sell out by May; cheaper options in market towns require transport planning but save £100+ per night. This guide covers the five most reliable areas, when ballots open, and how to avoid the post-qualifying traffic jam. Accommodation registration opens in October; book within two weeks if you want choice.

Where to stay

Your options depend on budget and whether you'll drive or use park-and-ride coaches. Towcester is the closest town—five minutes by car, premium pricing, quiet during the day. Milton Keynes, 15 minutes north, has the best transport links (direct trains from London, coaches to the circuit). Northampton, 20 minutes south-west, offers the cheapest hotels and a park-and-ride service. Daventry, 25 minutes away, is quieter and cheaper still. Oxford, 40 minutes south, suits those who want proper restaurants and don't mind the extra drive. On-site camping at Woodlands and Whittlebury Park fills by April.

1. Towcester

Five minutes from the Silverstone main entrance; you can see the Copse corner from some rooms. Towcester is a Georgian market town with one main street (Watling Street runs through it). Hotels here command £250–400 per night during race week, with limited stock—typically 150–200 rooms across three or four properties. The Saracens Head Hotel is the anchor property, 18th-century coaching inn with 37 rooms, ten-minute walk to pubs and the Thursday evening buzz. Parking is straightforward on-site or on-street. You'll drive past queuing traffic leaving the circuit and pay for that proximity. Best for: those who prioritise being first to the paddock, don't mind paying, and want to walk to dinner. Expect £15–20 Ubers back after 10 p.m.

2. Milton Keynes

Fifteen minutes north; the most reliable transport hub. Milton Keynes Central railway station receives direct services from London Euston (65 minutes), Birmingham, and Leicester. Three dedicated park-and-ride coach services run from the station to Silverstone—journey time 25 minutes, cost around £15–20 return. The town centre has 2,000+ hotel rooms across Premier Inn, Travelodge, and Travel Lodge, ranging £80–180 per night. Premier Inn Milton Keynes Central (opposite the station) is convenient if you're catching an early coach; DoubleTree by Hilton (centre, upmarket) suits those wanting a proper bar after qualifying. Parking at the station costs £5–8 for the day. Best for: London day-trippers, those without a car, groups splitting hotel costs.

3. Northampton

Twenty minutes south-west by car; the budget-conscious choice with active park-and-ride. Two Northampton hotels run their own coaches to Silverstone (cost £12–18 return, capacity 50–80 per coach). Premier Inn and Travelodge offer rooms at £70–140 per night; the Northampton Marriott (town centre, 3-star) sits at £120–180 and has a bar. The town centre is walkable, with pubs and restaurants within five minutes of most hotels. Expect a 40-minute coach ride on Friday evening (heavier traffic) versus 25 minutes on Saturday morning. Car parking is free at most hotels or £3–5 at the station car park. Best for: families, those booking late (last availability often here), budget travellers willing to accept a longer coach ride.

4. Daventry

Twenty-five minutes west; quieter than Northampton, fewer tourists, lower prices. Premier Inn and Travelodge rooms run £60–120 per night. No dedicated Silverstone coach service; you'll drive or take a taxi (15–20 minutes, expect £25–35). The town itself has basic food and drink (chain restaurants, a few decent pubs near the market square). Hotel parking is free. Daventry works if you have a rental car and don't mind a solo drive back late at night, or if you're staying with friends and sharing driving. Best for: solo travellers on tight budgets, those happy to spend 30 minutes driving post-race.

5. Oxford

Forty minutes south; the longest drive but the best town. Oxford has independent restaurants, proper gastropubs (The Turf Tavern, The Bear), and bookshops. Hotels range £100–250 per night; The Old Parsonage (Boutique, city centre) and Premier Inn Oxford (budget, Summertown) are reliable anchors. You'll spend three to four hours in traffic on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon—plan accordingly. Useful if you're combining the GP with a long weekend in the Cotswolds or visiting family. Best for: those prioritising non-F1 entertainment, staying for four-plus days, willing to wake early and drive.

On-site camping

Woodlands and Whittlebury Park are the two official Silverstone camping facilities. Woodlands is a 400-acre field on the circuit perimeter; pitches cost £60–100 for the weekend, depending on vehicle size. Whittlebury Park (five minutes away, former holiday park) offers glamping and caravan pitches at £120–180. Both fill by mid-April. Facilities are basic but adequate (portaloos, water, no showers). Gates open Thursday midday; expect 90-minute queues Friday evening into Saturday morning. Book via the official Silverstone site in October.

Getting there + getting back

By car: Silverstone is 84 miles north of London on the A43/M40 corridor. Friday qualifying draws 60,000 spectators; traffic builds 2–4 p.m. onwards. Allow two hours from Milton Keynes, three from Oxford. There is no official trackside parking—you park in allocated zones and shuttle-bus to the paddock. By coach: park-and-ride from Milton Keynes and Northampton depart 6–7 a.m. (45-minute journey), returning 6–10 p.m. (depending on day). Trains: only Milton Keynes station has direct services; other towns require a taxi or hire car from the station. Last trains back to London depart Milton Keynes at 11:15 p.m. Friday/Saturday. No Sunday evening train service after 9 p.m.

When to book

Silverstone accommodation registration opens in mid-October for the following July GP. Prices spike immediately; book within 14 days if you want a choice of area and hotel type. Hotels release a second allocation in January (cancellations). By May, only premium properties in Towcester and boutique hotels elsewhere have stock. Camping fills by mid-April. If you've missed the October window, call the Silverstone box office (they hold a small contingency allocation) or check Airbnb and farm-stay sites in villages like Brackley (ten minutes) and Silverstone village itself (two minutes)—these rarely list via the official site.

Local food + drink

Towcester high street has the Plough Inn (gastropub, decent pies) and Folly Tea Rooms (afternoon tea). Milton Keynes city centre is chain-heavy; the Real Italian Pizza Company and Wetherspoon's Moon Under Water are reliable. Northampton's Fish House (seafood, fine dining) and Collingtree Park (golf club, open to non-members for food) offer a step up. Oxford dominates for variety; book Friday lunch slots by Wednesday. Skip Thursday evening; every restaurant is full of race fans.
